Hi
Just moved to scotland(just outside Edinburgh) and looking for a great place to holiday. We have already been to Creiff and Peebles Hydro.Maybe a cottage, near the sea with lot's of things to do for the little ones (7 and 5).
I have no idea of distances or places(probably no longer than 3hrs in the car)
Any recommendations would be great
thanks

Ah, the world is your lobster........ Only thing is what do mean by lots of things to do with kids?? Is that is being smack bang/open the door onto a beach/lots of rock pools the odd boat trip or walk.....or more tourist facilities/attractions?

In three hours you could get to Oban/Mull (not including the ferry trip) or nearly up to the Ullapool area. Another thought is the Moray coast or the Black Isle on the east. Personally I love the west coast and there are great beaches on Mull. The ferry takes about an hour and there are a fair few over the day. Activities are limited to beaches walks and outdoor things

Website below gives a great overview of different areas or can I suggest you buy 'Scotland the Best' although not kid centred its a great guide to top places to visit/eat etc

Go West, young lady! West!

You can get to the West Highlands very easily. Cowal is nice, or Oban (not IN Oban, but surrounding area.

A little more driving (from Edinburgh, maybe 4 hours) would get you to the real North-West - Gairloch, Ullapool etc and it is brilliant.

Islands are also a good option - Mull has been mentioned but Arran is also fantastic. Inverness shouldn't be much more than 3 hours from Edinburgh if you get a clear run up, and there are places in the Highlands before there which are good too - Carrbridge, Grantown-On-Spey, Aviemore.

Don't rule out not-so-distant Fife, especially St.Andrews, and the East Neuk.

We tend to go further - we have a house in the Outer Hebrides but that is a lot further than you would like to go - it is roughly 10 hours door to door for us including 3 hours on the ferry, check in time, stopping at Burger King to placate small children, toilet stops etc. It is SO worth it though, maybe when your kids are a bit older?

(live in Scotland, always have pretty much, holidayed in Scotland as a child all the time. Still do!)
