I want 1 week end of july for 2 adults and 2 dc,s 4 and 6.We have to travel by train from kent as no car.Self catering cottage or lodge.I dont mind whether or not its by the sea but want relaxing getaway within easy reach of a few tourist type attractions for little ones.

Years ago when ds1 was 2 we had a long weekend in Dover. Very nice, enjoyed Dover castle and walking along the cliffs.

Have also stayed on the south edge of the New Forest. Lymington IIRC. Took a daytrip to Isle of Wight and visited the Needles.

What about IoW? Train to Portsmouth, then the hovercraft ferry. Lots to do on the IoW. We've been there several times with our 3dc.

Lots to do and see on the IoW. We tend to stay on the south side, but have a car so no transportation issues. There is a good train service on the west side of the island, and it's very small so I would expect there to be buses to the main attractions all over the island. Shanklin is very touristy, but we found lovely B&B there, and there's easy access to other parts of the island using public transport.

Shanklin Chine, Fort Victoria and the Needles Old and New Batteries are our favourites.

Oh, and if you do go via Portsmouth, take the time to visit the Spinnaker Tower. Largest glass floor in Europe, IIRC. Took dh quite a long time to muster the courage to walk over it!
