I just can't seem to find a decent 4/5 star hotel or maybe self catering that looks child friendly and not ultra trendy. Prefer to spend under £200 aq night. Has anyone got a suggestion?

this one

We stay in London every year for a weekend with the dcs (5 and 7). We always do 5 star cos we is worth it . Have stayed at the Ritz (poncey, not child friendly, above itself), the Lanesborough (quite lovely - but it is the other guests not the staff who are the issue), and Claridges (up its own arse - you can keep it). I liked the Atheneum, still a luxury hotel (albeit not quite as sassy, classy as the Lanesborough) but v v child friendly. Has a childrens concierge for goodness sake! - Very relaxed there.

In fact, on their website - check out what they are doing for Easter. I think they tells you all you need to know about their ethos

It really is a lovely place. We like a bit of luxury - who doesn't, but we really aren't into pretension. When we go to London for the weekend we drive up in my 'quite nice' car which is however littered with crip packets, mud and vegetation from the New Forest (have 2 dogs). I am generally wearing my M&S jeans that have seen better days and my battered boots. I want a luxury hotel that doesn't give a damn about that sort of thing - and the Atheneum is in this bracket

Oh it looks really great - at last a hotel that understands adults need some luxury even if they do have children. Sadly rates seem to be £300 a night plus VAT. For that we could go to kids first choice (Eurodisney)

I am going to see if I can find a discount for them.

For better affordability - I would go with the Marriot chain. Four star hotels which are comfortable and well maintained, quite smart, helpful staff etc. I have stayed at the York Marriot and the Birmingham Marriot and have had a relaxing and enjoyable time. There must be a couple of Marriots in London

Just checked the Kensington one - about £189 for a double room.

Tbh - it's tough to get 4/5 star in London for less

Quite a few of the chains such as Marriott, Hilton, Crown Plaza etc, let 2 kids stay & eat for fee. So even if the original cost sounds quite high for 2, it can work out quite resonable for 4. We make sure that we have full breakfast included in the price and then do not normally need to eat much lunch, which can save a fortune.

To be honest one of the places our kids liked best was a premier inn. It cost under £90 for the 4 of us. We were given a huge family room & the staff made a real fuss of the kids. They liked it better than the Langsborough & the Crown Plaza in Kensington.
