where to stay in cornwall

we've decided to go to cornwall for a week in a cottage but neither me nor dh know the area at all and would like some recommendations of where to stay please.

would need to be child friendly (ds is 2) and near a beach and nice walks. a castle wouldn't go amiss either! (i don't ask for much do I?)

oh and a shop so nowhere too remote.

thanks

If you are not set on a cottage have a look at Bedruthan Steps Hotel. Has fab family facilities.

How built up do you want?

St Ives gets very very busy, and is actually quite big I think.

Personally I prefer the south coast, south of Falmouth, but it's much quieter.

There's a company called Helpful Holidays who do Cornwall. I've used them a few times.

we went to the lizard one year - had a lovely beach - kynance cove i think - which was quite sheltered as cliffs all around. or you could go somewhere in the centre - say bodmin and then you can travel to north or south. around weybridge is nice as well. but north cornwall is very choppy see so prob not suitable for 2 year old

Cornish cottage holidays, we got a nice cottage near Watergate Bay ,last year, May half term £580 for the week ,slept 6 people . Not too badly priced we thought.

if you do North Cornwall, stay near Tintagel, you will love the castle there!

I can thoroughly recommend this place:

www.porthveormanor.com/index.php

We stayed last year in one of their self-catering cottages, which was huge. They have a nice outdoor pool, lovely restaurant and Porth beach is practically on your doorstep.

Also, it is quite close to Newquay (but far enough away if Newquay is not your thing.. we actually quite like it!). Then in the other direction are the more upmarket resorts of Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth with their huge expanses of sand, also great for surfing and bodyboarding. Loads of nice pubs (the Phoenix, the Mermaid Inn) and restaurants (Jamies' Fifteen) in the area as well.

It's not particulary cheap, but not as expensive as other parts of Cornwall.
