Few days at half-term for one woman and a 3 y/o with no car

We are being abandoned by rest of family who are going off with in-laws (interminable story). So we would like a hotel in a town we can get to by train with a pool perhaps and some other kids around and OK food. Very grateful for any thoughts!

Go to York and visit the Castle Museum and the train museum?

Go to Chester and have a day at the zoo (it's much nicer when the weather is colder imho).

Yep York. Not sure about city centre hotels with pools but you could easily get the bus out the monks cross shopping park and visit the waterworld pool there.

I think the Novotel has a pool and is central. Not stayed there though.

Oooh yes the Novotel - it's got a reasonable reputation. My sil stayed there a while back and was perfectly happy.
