What to do in Northumbria - nr Bewick - it's predicted rain?

I'm off up there in two weeks with a 20 month old son and looking for ideas of what to do. There seem to be lots of lovely beaches, but what would you recommend in the rain.

Don't mind walking along beach wrapped up with wellies but is there anywhere nearby to warm up after?

What to do away from the beach, any nice towns and villages to visit etc?

Any nice parks (with or without animals) or farms?

Alnwick is nice. There's a castle, shops and cafes, a large second-hand bookshop, a museum and the Alnwick Garden.

We've been there twice when the ds's were 2.5 and 12m, then 3.5 and 2y.
Rained quite a bit both times, we just put their wellies and raincoats on and went on the beach at Bamburgh. Tons of rockpools under the castle whether its raining or not... the child won't mind?

We found Alnwick castle a pain as the staff kept asking us to carry the children when we toured the rooms.

However for nice villages I would recommend Ford and Etal (google it), there are lovely buildings to look at, and a little railway which the boys loved.

But not as much as they loved running on the beach whatever the weather!

There are a few farm type places and indoor play areas too from what I remember. Have a great time,it is a lovely area.

Have been that way lots of times and we love it even out of season. Bamburgh is beautiful and the beach between there and Seahouses is fantastic even in bad weather. Take a ball, bucket and spade and look at rock pools in the rain! www.potadoodledo.com has painting pottery at Berwick too.

A really nice place to eat during the day is The Barn at Beal - lovely food right by the causeway across to Holy Island.
If your DS was a little older he might enjoy Pot a Doodle Do
