Romantic break with DH, Scotland. Where to?

My wonderful Mil OFFERED to take my 2 dd for one or 2 nights next week. We are going to go away to a hotel or guest house within 2-3 hours of Greenock. Loch lomond, St Andrews or even the Lake District are all options. Any recommendations of places to stay?

St Andrews is gorgeous...

We love St Andrews as went there for our honeymoon (9 years ago) and often go for short breaks or day trips. But what hotels are good? We stayed in Craigtown meadows on our honeymoon, as we were young and poor post graduates.

Barony Castle near Peebles is lovely. Lots of nice walks, lovely grounds, couple of nice country pubs 5 mins walk away and they have bikes you can use too.

easy drive (an hour give or take) to St. Andrews and Loch Lomond.

Depends how much you have to spend. The Rusacks Hotel is lovely. I would be staying there if we were going without DD and we had the money.

I would head for Glencoe.

Oh the highlands got to go there soooo romantic lots of hills and scenery and plenty of lovely places to visit and stay.

We stayed at Monachyle Mhor in the Trossachs for an anniversary weekend a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

It has to be the Lodge on Loch Lomond. Has a spa and great restaurant but best of all you have a sauna in your room and a balcony overlooking the Loch. All like a giant log cabin and so romantic! You could go over on the Ferry from Greenock to Dunoon and drive over Rest and Be Thankful down to Loch Lomond. It is one of the most scenic routes in Scotland and I always think a ferry makes you feel you are going 'out of the world'.
It is a long way from Greenock to St Andrews for just one/two days.

This place is also rather lovely, if you like the "own sauna" thing. When DH and I stayed there, our cabin had a sauna and a jacuzzi-type bath.

The Lodge on the Loch - beautiful setting. Would defo be my first choice.
