Places to go near Bude, Cornwall

We're off on holiday next week and will be staying about 2 miles outside of Bude.

Can anyone recommend good places to eat (with 2 small children), nice beaches (sandy if possible) and other places to visit.

Padstow is nice. My children enjoy the boat trip over and then fish and chips when we get there.

The Big Sheep is lovely for small children, had a wonderful day there.

Bude beach is great. There is a lovely inn just off the beach - very nice Sunday lunches (The Inn on the Green I think it's called)

Crealy is ok, my children enjoyed it.

Will have a think of some more.

The Big Sheep is great for a day out (also has a big indoor play area there if the weather is a bit hit and miss).

Beaches in and around Bude are all really good.

We stayed in Bideford at end of June and I came home wanting to up root and move.

My ds (3) started swimming lessons this week in the first stage of my plan to turn him into a surfer! He is really enjoying it too (was begging to surf on holiday!).

We stopped at a beach near Bude on the way back from Padstow which was really nice called (I think!) Widemouth Bay.

The Big Sheep which was really close to us was fantastic too. I think it is about 25 miles from Bude but well worth it if you have little ones. We enjoyed it so much we went back for a few hours on our last day as you could return for £4 withn the week. Our first visit was paid for with Tesco vouchers too (as was the holiday )

We also had a great meal at the New Inn in Kilkhampton -lots of seafood, did childrens meals too, but gets very busy so either book in advance or turn up early

Those of you who went to the Big Sheep- was it the same guy that did all the "shows" (lamb feeding, sheepdog, sheep racing etc)?

It was when we went and despite the fact that he must have to do what is basically the same spiel day-in/day-out he was so good at it, enthusiastic and very funny.

Oh and DS's sheep won the race -he still proudly uses his winners mug to drink from every day

Dh and I both said that the staff at The Big Sheep were fantastic and did a really good job of it. I think alot of places could learn from their example, the people there are the making of the place and were brilliant with children but also amusing enough for the adults.

Crooklets beach in Bude is really nice. A bit of a drive away is Tintagel which is a tiny village leading down to the beach which is sandy but also rocky, great for rock pooling if your kids are of that age.

Yes it was one guy who did it all - very funny! The staff there are lovely. Even the lady at the entrance was funny.

She came out to the queue and was asking for season tickets holders, those with vouchers or chocolates for the office staff to come forward. Not funny when written down, kind of had to be there but she raised a laugh!

The food was very good quality. Simple but good quality. DH and I had baked potatoes - lovely. The children had pasta with the scrummiest tomato sauce. Very reasonably priced too!

We are Big Sheep fans - small is beautiful

Have holidayed near Bude several times. If you get good weather as we always have the beaches are great. The main one in Bude is called Summerleaze and has a sea water swimming pool where it is safe to use inflatables. Widemouth beach (locals call it Widmuth) is my favourite but get there early as the car park fills up quickly. Both beaches have life guards in little red shorts providing some eye candy for the laydeez, put your shades on and DH won't know you are ogling!
