Isle of Wight for the evening, should we head for Shanklin/Ryde or somewhere else?

Thinking of popping over on Lymington ferry just for the evening - our wedding anniversary - too late for usual attractions (Ive been there on a day trip before but can't remember where we went!), just looking for a nice seaside resort with a smallish amusement arcade for DS (9), maybe crazy golf, decent chip shop (we are easily pleased!)

Can't remember where there is a pier, (Ryde?) and if so is it worth going on it?

14 years is a loooong time, LOL!

Just wondering as well if we can just turn up and get on the ferry with the car (thinking of a Friday) or best to book (would be going over before start of school hols).

Shanklin or Ventnor would be nicer than Ryde. Shanklin beach has a couple of ok pubs, crazy golf and arcade. You might want to check what time things close though. We were there at half-term and everything shut at about 5pm.

Thanks Chippy, will check before we go!
