We're in the fantastic position of being able to go away without kids at the end of June, but are completely stuck as to where to go. We were thinking of Lille or Paris, then decided we should stay in the UK and started thinking about Edinburgh - but I can't find any hotels/B&Bs that are still available and don't cost over £100 a night.

We're now thinking perhaps we could stay somewhere in the countryside - a nice small romantic hotel or B&B and maybe just do things like long country walks, read books, nice meal somewhere... but really don't know where to start.

Any suggestions? We're in Oxfordshire - happy to take train to a city or drive.

You want to come down to Swansea/Gower peninsula. Tis spectacular scenery and fantastic clifftop walks. This area was the first in Britain to be declared an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are some great little hotels/restaraunts - Fairyhill in Reynoldston is a fave - and you'd be close enough to the city if you were so inclined.

Wherever you go - enjoy!

Oh Deemented, I've just booked a place in Edinburgh in the end, but the Gower peninsula would have been a great idea if I'd thought about it earlier. We went there in 98, before kids and was one of the best weekends ever. Had a huge empty beach all to ourselves. Beautiful part of the world.
