Formby or Crosby? Could someone help me plan a lovely day out for 3 DCs?

Because I think they are our nearest beaches. And we're not going on holiday this summer and the kids are clamouring for sand and sea.

I believe that they are both child friendly with stuff to do (squirrels? Or did I dream that? )

So, need to know about what's there so to speak, at each place. Cafes? Shade? Carparking? Play areas or attractions nearby? B&B/campsite if we decide to stay over? Bucket and spade shop?

Other things you can recommend nearby?

Formby! I am from Crosby originally but not lived there for many years. I recall though that Formby beach was much nicer (or go to the squirrel reserve?)

Lets see, Crosby has those bronze men things on the beach. They might be worth a visit.

Formby has great sand dunes for running over. I think the squirrel reserve is in Freshfield near to Formby.

The good thing about Formby is that it very near to Southport where you will find loads of B&B's and hotels and you can just get the train to Formby (a couple of stops, maybe 10 mins or so?).

You'll definately get bucket & spade shops in Southport.

You can actually get the train to Freshfield, Formby & Crosby from Southport (although for Crosby beach you're probably better off with Waterloo station and wandering towards the Marina and beach that way (Marina is a bit of a non-attraction, unless you like sailing).

btw, we can't afford to go away this year so we're having a week at the PIL's near Cotswolds while they are on holiday and a week at my parents while they are away. I think we might visit the squirrel reserve - thanks for reminding me!

So. Does the sea ever actually come in? Or is it just the miles and miles of mud before any tiny ripples waves?

I don't recall ever seeing the tide come in at Southport! I wouldn't bother with that beach - use Southport as a base and go to Freshfield/Formby. If you're only going for the day don't bother with Crosby/Waterloo. You'll be disappointed!

We have been to the squirrel reserve lots of times, it is a nice spot for a picnic and you can look out for Coleen Rooney's engagement ring that she threw away whilst you are there. Don't think she ever found it!

The beach is not the best in the world but the sand dunes are good fun for playing cowboys/indians and for surfing down if you remember their sledges.
