Tywyn-help help help have just booked a holiday cottage here, with no knowledge of what it is like

have now at the last minute changed our holiday plans this year, and because of availability I have just booked a cottage in Tywyn.
The cottage looks ok, clean and practical but not v stylish and I ended up booking this because it was a few minutes from the beach which sounds lovely and sandy, but I am now panicking because someone described Tywyn as a bit Blackpooly.
I have never been to Blackpool so am not sure really what this means, but what I do not want is some mega beach resort etc
Tell me about Tywyn, the railway sounds great
I holidayed as a child near Caernarfon so I like the region of Snowdonia

Haven't been there since the 70s, but it's simply not big enough to be Blackpool-y. I think there was an amusement arcade. Maybe that is enough to condemn it for the purists...

There is a Tywyn and a Towyn. I think that Towyn is near Rhyl and more likely to be the one described as a bit 'Blackpool-y' (though I may be wrong). Tywyn is on Cardigan Bay - though a good 1-2 hours away from the Caernarfon part of Snowdonia. Plenty of nice places to visit nearby though.

Tywyn in mid wales is very much fish and chips and ice cream shops. Nice. Lots of little railways, also you can go inland to the Centre for Alternative Technology at Mchynthllyth (which I can't spell) which is a lovely little town too. You can go up Cadr Idris which is a cute little mountain suitable for children. and there are lots of sandy beaches. I went on holiday there as a child but went back there to camp as an adult, I still like it.

Yes, know it was a bit of a way from Caernarfon, quite liked the idea of somewhere new to go.
Well , this is all sounding reassuring.
Rhyl always sounded a bit more 'entertaining'
We were slightly as children in regards those who managed to get their parents to holiday somewhere with a litte more entertainment
Now as a parent, I have turned into my parents

i love it, not blackpooly, or doesnt have to be, nearby aberdovey has a lovely beach, plenty of walks

and have found this

We took every holiday on a campsite on the Talylin railway, which ends in Tywyn, and I have brilliant memories. Took my daughter there for a very emotional return trip last week and she loved it. Get a week's pass to the railway and stop at different stops every day for waterfalls and lovely walks. Stop at the honey ice cream factory just outside Tywyn for great ice cream. Aberdovey has amazing beaches perfect and Ynyslas, opposite, is incredible. She loved the Centre for Alternative Technology. As well as lovely shops, Macunclyth (rubbish spelling!) has a nice leisure centre and lovely little park. The organic cafe in Macunclyth has loads of info of things going on spread over the walls, including forest explorers mornings for kids of all ages. Enjoy!
