Bloody Awful Caravan Site - Sandylands

We booked a cheapy with The Sun. The one we got was Sandylands at Saltcoats. It's a dump. Once you get past the haulage yard, the park is horrendous. really untidy. We got this big lecture about not smoking in the caravan only to find the caravan stinking of smoke with fag ash on the floor. The worst was when we moved the couches to find discarded food and an infestation of ants. When we asked to get moved, the only manager there didn't know how to find a free caravan so had to contact a receptionist to get some where to put us. Luckily the woman from housekeeping was able to tell him there was a non arrival so we moved there. All this and goods trains going past dead early in the morning.

Luckily the weather was okay and DS was happy going to the beach or else we'd have been home 2 nights ago. I tried to e-mail Park Resorts but they just have one of those e-mail enquiry forms.

Aw gscrym - I am really sorry you had this experience. We are also going on a Sun holiday and thanks to a lovely mumsnetter (Megbusset - hi!) we were able to get a priority code so we could choose which site in Scotland to go to. I was also initially interested in Sandylands but read reviews that said it was dire, in one of the most depressing towns in Scotland and next to an abbatoir. Still, at least your DS had a good time. We are going to Auchenalrie in Dumfries and Galloway on our Sun break in June - it hasn't got many reviews which I took to be a good sign. If it is good I will post back on here for others who are booking future Sun breaks. I have found this number for Park Resorts if it helps - 0871 200 6200

I think I advised against NOT going to Sandylands on here, I am from Saltcoats and why anyone would chose to go there for a holiday baffles me. There are far nicer places to go up North or East.

Caravan Park next to an abbatoir - lovely, I used to walk along the prom in the Summer and cry at the sounds of the cows mooing and being shot.

Sweetkitty - your name sounds v familiar. I think it was actually your review I read on Sandylands. You were the one who gave the heads up about the abbatoir. It looks so lovely in the brochure too - lying so and so's!
