Inspired by another thread, we are off to South Hams for the first time as a family. Boys of 8 and 6. What should we not miss?

Pennywell Farm - is that South Devon Top day out though

nevergoogledragonbutter · 06/04/2009 19:01

pennywell farm is in the south hams.
i wondered if it might be a bit young for 6-8 years olds but they do some falconry there too.

nearer exeter is haldon forest for some great mountain biking trails, walking trails etc. they also have a treetop thing where you are tied on with ropes (crap explanation), anyway that looks fun, but check the website for the age limits.

Back before I lived down here we used to come ot the South Hams every summer. We stayed near Bantham, which is a lovely beach near Kingsbridge. Totnes is good for a mosey, full of friendly hippies. I think Pennywell might be better suited to preschool age too, but I could be wrong. Quaywest waterpark is near Paignton and would be brilliant for your boys I think, lots of waterslides. Morwellham Quay is a good day out, it's basically a like stepping into a victorian village and port. Ashburton is nice for a quiet day, there's a brillaint secondhand bookshop there if that's your thing

Woodlands near Blackawton

Blackpool Sands for water sports - though it's normally smallish pebbles on the beach rather than sand

Bigbury/Burgh Island

Paignton Zoo

Buckfast Otter sanctuary & butterfly farm, the River Dart Country Park is nearby

House of Marbles, near Bovey Tracey - amazing marble runs, marble shop & glassworks & Trago Mills nearby just off the A38 is worth a visit too.

Where will you be staying?

LadyMuck · 06/04/2009 19:18

Thanks.

We're staying at Higher Bowden, which is near Blackpool Sands I think. A water park sounds good.

Ah yes I forgot Woodlands and River Dart Country Park! Those were always our favourite days on holiday, they will have so much fun (and be totally worn out at the end of the day )
