Cheap and cheerful farm stay/caravan/self cater with stuff to do in Scotland or North-East!??

Looking for a cheap and cheerful holiday option in this area. Camping is a no-no but would consider caravan?

How much stuff are you looking for on site, or are you looking for stuff do do nearby?
Do you want Haven/ Butlins style or more quiet countyside?
What age of children?
What sort of budget?
When?
