Could you recommend a hotel near Chatsworth House?

I fancy a trip to Chatsworth House and we'd like a romantic hotel near there. We're leaving the toddler at home with the grandparents so keen to make the most of the evening. So, we'd like a hotel that will feed us well, with comfy beds for us poor sleep deprived parents.

Any ideas?

depends a bit on what you're after. I went to Fischers and found it really stuffy. to the point of making me feel uncomfortable. the waiter was a sycophantic idiot. at the risk of sounding like a bit of an arse that's not because I'm not used to posh restaurants or hotels. the food was superb. but dh and I really didn;t like the ambience. I haven't been, so can't recommend it but, like lulurose says I'd be tempted to try the peacock.

if you could face self ctaering you could try the hunting tower or, a place I've always wanted to try north lees hall - but the link doesn;t seem to be upto date. I had a feeling that you could hire it catered - but can;t seem to find anything from googling.

www.riber-hall.co.uk/ is supposed to be quite nice.

www.shottlehall.co.uk/ is very nice, but rather pricey

another question is how close do you want to be? Shottle Hall looks totally lovely - but is quite a long way from the house (18 miles according to google). The devonshire at beeley is supposed to be good - listed by Alistair Sawday - but again I can;t recommend it - last time I went I got a bottle of coke and a packet of crisps to eat in the car park. If you like walking you can walk to the house from Beeley - it's 2 or 3 miles, mostly through the estate.

I don't mind being a few miles away, but 18 miles does sound a bit too far. Would love to walk but I am currently 30 weeks pregnant with SPD, so need to save my energy for the Chatsworth itself. I'm looking forward to this very much, as we won't be able to manage a childfree night for quite a while after this.

I had considered the Devonshire, and I am going to speak to DH later about The Peacock. Fischers looks great but a bit put off by sycophantic idiots!

maybe I'm harsh....it was a very quiet Friday lunchtime in January. My mum was suprised when I told her I'd found it a bit stuffy. she seemed to think it's not normally like that. however some friends of ours said they found it a bit stuffy too.

I stayed at the Devonshire Arms in Beeley last year and would thoroughly recommend it. Ask for a room in the annexe as they are larger and newly decorated. The staff were attentive but not stuffy. Food superb especially the breakfast. Lovely laid back atmosphere but stylish enough to be special.

My only criticism would be the decor in the restaurant but you can eat in the bar area which I thought had a better atmosphere.

that's nice to know fatjac. we've recently moved to teh area (though I know it well from childhood) and we need nice places to take all our southern visitors. would you take kids there? for lunch? (I don;t particularly care about child-friendly menus - I just mean is it the kind of place where kids would feel welcome and parents comfortable?)

Would be fine to take kids there for lunch.
When we stayed there was a couple with a toddler and baby at breakfast. Didn't see them at dinner as we ate late on.

It only has 8 bedrooms but was busy. Seemed popular with walkers and villagers. In the evening the bar had a real 'village pub' vibe about it.

I want to go back. NOW

thanks fatjac. we've had quite a lot of visitors and we definitely need a good place for lunch - otherwise we spend an entire weekend cooking. we'll definitely try the Devonshire on the next lot.

Stayed at Riber hall on our Wedding night, very dissapointing...the staff were stuffy and our room had one of those battery operated air freshners that squirted out vile smelling stuff every half an hour, through the night. We both woke up covered in bites too...

I've eaten at the Peacock and it was absolutely lovely, would love to stay there. Does the Devonshire still have a no booking policy? We left very hungry last time we tried to get in there.

Oh I want to go to Matlock now! My home town...I miss it x

I'd say East Lodge would be a safe bet and you can wave to my family down the road!

Ahhh, luckily my Mum and Dad are still in Starkholmes so we have a lovely base to stay in whenever we visit.
