Cosy hotel/B&B within a couple of hours drive from Essex

I am after a cosy hotel or B&B with a good place to eat near by within a couple of hours from Essex. I dont mind if its in a town or in the country, as long as there is something to do for the day (visiting, walking).

I want to take DH as a surprise for his birthday.

I used to live in a beautiful village in Kent called Chilham (not far from Canterbury) lots of places to walk/explore. I've never used it but i remember this B&B and here's a few more in the area
