We're looking for a nice hotel in the South Devon area (Exeter, Dartmouth, Sidmouth maybe -not Torbay though) for DP's 40th birthday.

PIL have offered to have the DC and as they are in Torbay we want to go somewhere nearby but a bit more romantic than the "Enlish Riviera" IYSWIM .

Somewhere a bit special but not stupidly expensive. Either with a good restaurant or with places to eat nearby.

It might fall into the category of stupidly expensive, but DH and I stayed at Burgh Island for a night as our last holiday before ds arrived - dinner included, and everyone dresses up in black tie (ish) for the dinner. It's all very Agatha Christie, and a fab night. We couldn't afford two nights though!

Burgh Island in Salcombe is gorgeous.

Fingals is also lovely (Dartmouth) but is organic / shabby chic and not for everyone (I loved it, but DH vowed never to return!!!)

May be a bit too near Torbay but Orestome manor in Maidencombe was nice a couple of years ago. We were actually looking for somewhere for a night before Xmas as parents live near dartmoor and wanted to leave DD with them and pop away for a night but everywhere was £200plus. Think there are some quite cool hotels in Exeter now but don't know any off-hand.
Shame on you for not wanting to stay in the 'English Riviera'!

I second Fingals. It is my all time fav.

I see what you mean about Burgh Island being very Agatha Christie -looks lovely but maybe a bit too pricey.

Any more ideas anyone?

How about Thurlestone beautiful coastline (very close to Burgh Island)lovely walks, golf course.

The White House near Salcombe is lovely - boutique-y and small if that's what you are after

If you like the look of Thurlestone, but want a cheaper option, there is another hotel situated up on the cliff called Heron House Hotel. Smaller, but still with an outside pool.
