I'm staying near Gt Yarmouth from 29th Dec-2nd Jan

Please help me decide what to do (if there is anything) near Yarmouth in Norfolk over this period. I have rented a chalet (with heating) for 4 nights/5 days and wondered if any Mners have any ideas. We are a family of 5. 2 adults, 2 teens, 1 crazy toddler!

Bewilderwood - if it is open - great for toddlers, not sure about teens - will depend on the teen ! Have a look at website

Norwich lovely for sight seeing and shopping. Probably an Xmas ice rink there somewhere, used to be a fair as well at Christmas

Blicking Hall if you like that sort of thing

Yarmouth Hippodrome (circus) and Pleasure Beach (fair - fantastic wooden roller coaster)

Southwold - down the coast - lovely Victorian seaside town

Yes Southwold is a great day out - very quirky pier, cutesy shops and good pubs. There is ice skating in Norwich - near the Forum. If you want to see the Broads - Ranworth is good, with a nice circular walk, as is How Hill (has an old eel-catcher's cottage/museum thingy). There's Pleasurewood Hills near Lowestoft - a poor man's Alton Towers, but I haven't been there for years so don't know how good it is these days.

pleasure beach will be closed at winter.

I like wroxham barns

pettitts quite good for the toddler.

fritton Lake countryworld if you like wintery walks.

oh and Norwich castle musuem if you are interested in history. The dungeons part is quite good.

ooh ooh, i'm getting excited now.... thought i would be stuck in for 5 days going crazy with them all. Even if we get a few hours out each day, that would be fab

Bewilderwood is closed - which is a shame

there is a sealife centre in gt yarmouth too, for wet days and make sure you buy chips off the market and eat them out the paper. God I miss them!

I grew up jsut outside gt Yarmouth, and still go back regularly for visits.

Agree a shame - it would look wonderful all lit up for christmas. My fave place when we visit my parents. kids love it, so unusual.

mine loved that too, but I guess it wouldn't be miuch fun in the rain. it a shame they not got wally's windmill any more neither - remmeber that?!

Er no ...! Remind me. I left when I was 18 (more than 20 yrs ago!) so maybe after my time !

Chopstheduck..... I love chips out of paper at the seaside too! will check out opening times of the sealife centre in a minute. p.s anyone reccomend any good,reasonably priced eating places, pubs, etc?

can't go wrong with fish and chips and Adnams beer in that part of the world !

the pontiac roadhouse on the accle straight (a47) between norwich and yarmouth (basically on your way home back from norwich) is supposed to be nice.

Most of gt yarmouth restaurants I would avoid personally!

Sunday lunch, there is a restaurant called Berrys on Gorleston high st that does a fantastic roast. Best to book ahead. Their number is 01493662677. I used to work there!

THere are quite a lot of nice pubs in norwich that do good food. The woolpack is defo a good one. The coach and horses. Most of them are of a similar standard really.

The eels foot in ormseby is good.

there is also a big pub in Burgh castle that does nice food called church farm. There is ancient roman ruins there, a big space excellent for flying kites, and great views over the braods.

weavers fish shop on baker st in gorleston is one of the best chips shops too. They jsut dont know how to make it down here!

The ice rink will be outside the library, the Forum. For the little one try Playbarn in Poringland, about 6 miles south of norwich. If you get to Blickling Hall theres some lovely winter walks but check it will be open, closed some days in winter.
