Can't recommend anywhere in your area but what about this site.

Or try the bargain secret hotels on Last minute.com. MSE suggests you cut & paste the description into google & it'll, most times, get you the hotel's own site so you know where it is.

Are you prepared to drive outside of London, say to the Surrey/Berkshire border area?

Penny Hill Park is nice, also has a Spa. (Near M3, J3)

Tylney Hall is also nice. Link is to their brochure which shows the log fire (page 4), though if that's lit of not, you'll have to check with the hotel. (Near M3, J5)

oooh pennyhill looks lovely!

Oh yes, and it's less than 35 miles from Central London (via road).
Snuggling seems to fit your requirement - Red Wine, Open Fire. Junior Suite seems to fit your requirement bed wise (see Virtual Tour)

Hertfordshire thegrove.co.uk

ah, the grove that looks nigh on perfect as we could get a train there straight from work in time for cocktails! is the food nice?

WideWebWitch · 28/10/2008 21:54

I've never been to The Grove but have been told it's a bit soul less.(soulles? soul-less? souless? All look wrong!)

What about Hotel Du Vin in Henley?
The Bingham in Richmond?

oranges · 28/10/2008 22:13

www, i was hoping you'd come here. the bingham is a little too close to home- we'd end up deciding it was a waste of money to stay in a hotel and just go out for dinner instead.

hotel du vin possible. have you been to the malmaison in oxford? i've always liked the look of it.

There is always cliveden if you wish to kick start the country out of recession.

What about the vineyard in Newbury? here
I don't think you can go too far wrong with the grove or pennyhill park.

WideWebWitch · 29/10/2008 09:31

Oranges, no, I haven't been to that Malmaison although it looks good, I think I'd be a bit worried about the ex prison aspect of it (if I've got the right one) although the governors suite looks nice and it's v reasonable. No parking but as long as you know that it would be fine and not too far from London. And Oxford v lovely for poking around bookshops, drinking in lovely pubs (which you wouldn't be able to do with atoddler!)

hellywobs · 17/11/2008 20:20

What about the Rectory Hotel in Crudwell?

hellywobs · 17/11/2008 20:22

Sorry, just noticed you wanted somewhere near London. Well maybe it will be useful for someone else - it was featured in Red magazine and I stayed there in September.
