We went last week and I just wanted to share how good it was! We went by train from London and had no car which was no problem. You can walk all over. There are pebble beaches, sandy beaches, rock pools, sea life centre, harbour/boats, big shopping area, etc etc!

We really loved it!

I know, it's great. I went a few summers ago and it felt very Mediterranean.

I rarely visit places and think "I could live here" as I am too attached to London, but Weymouth would be high on my list. Oh, except for the lack of good organic breads and other health foods!

Crumbs, Weymouth would be one of the last places on my list of places to live! We have always found it to be a bit grimy somehow, although I admit the beaches are great for children and it's very safe swimming.

I do like the harbour and fort area and some of the non-touristy places around Weymouth, but the centre of Weymouth and the shopping bits aren't very pleasant at all.

Dorset has much much nicer places to visit and live than Weymouth, although I admit Weymouth is good for day-trips. We did once have a week there, and again I admit there are lots for children to do and it's all very walkable, but I wouldn't have a week there again and it isn't on our list of top UK holiday destinations!

My in-laws would agree with you there - they have had countless holidays there and even now it's one of only about 3 places they would consider for a summer day-trip.

I've probably offended everyone living in Weymouth now!

I agree about the shopping area - it was a bit grim, but we didn't go there much. I just thought there was so much variety and lovely beauty spots.

I would never give up London though

Noooooooooooo, so many much nicer places to live than Weymouth.

IlanaK · 28/10/2008 16:59

Ok then - through some of your top spots at me then. We are too broke to go on normal holidays anymore and have decided to start house swapping. We have no car and the kids hate them anyway, so needs to be like Weymouth - walkable or good public transport.

Nice 3 bed central London flat on offer for swap!

Swanage is good.

Marne · 28/10/2008 17:27

We like swanage, weymouth is ok as its only 40 minutes drive from us but it is always packed in the summer, also sandbanks in poole is nice. Dorset is a lovely place, which is why i would never leeve

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/10/2008 17:44

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/10/2008 17:45

schmu · 30/10/2008 14:29

we like it too

AmIWhatAndWhy · 30/10/2008 14:31

I like Weymouth! I agree loads of lovely places in Dorset, But Cornwall is my all time favourite area for u.k holidays , closely followed by Wester Ross.

saggyhairyarse · 30/10/2008 20:57

Ecowarrier, fear not, I was thinking the same as you!

Spent many a holiday down there as Aunt lived in Weymouth and Grandmother on Portland. I also love the harbour area etc but am trying to work out where could be described as 'meditteranean'...

saggyhairyarse · 30/10/2008 21:00

Not sure how you would get there from London but Tenby is lovely!
