"Romantic" Venue required within 3 hours of Edinburgh for adult only break

This year my parents are coming to us for christmas and have kindly volunteered to stay on for a couple of nights so that DH and I can go away.

We were thinking of the Lakes as that is one of our favourite destinations but am open to other suggestions. Ideally somewhere within walking distance of restaurants, with a king sized bed, but not costing the same as our monthly mortgage.

Any ideas ?

Seaham Hall - Sunderland - Not much else around there & pricey
Malmaison - we just had a lovely weekend at Leith, guessing its too close for you - Newcastle?
Mar Hall - Between Glagow and Loch Lomond

I second Geordieminx's suggestions. Malmaison have a Newcastle hotel which is nice, and I think Hotel du Vin are opening one up there.

Seaham Hall and Samling both expensnive but lovely.

Stayed in the Hotel Du Vin in Harrogate a few time and it is lovely, plus plenty of nice shops/restaurants around.

Oh I have read about Monachlye Mhor before keep meaning to book it for DHs birthday which is mid Jan and its always shut then, must check if it is open then.

I like the idea of the Samling but isn't it hideously expensive. Thanks geordie will have a look at those.

Think the Mal in Newcastle would be nice (I actually live in Glasgow btw - so not just recommending it as its my home town)

Its in a great location, on the Quayside, nice italian and tapas next door, across the bridge from the Baltic Art Gallery, 5 minutes walk from some great pubs

Meant to say we enjoy walking and aren't great city folk so although the Mal sounds nice its probably not for us. Harrogate is an interesting option though.Ponders thoughtfully ....

Oh thanks geordie. good to have lots of options as due to credit crunch am planning to leave it until last minute and then ringing to see what deal we can get. Yes agal, would love to know as have heard it is nice.

Harrogate, lovely place for a weekend.

A touch further, York is fantastic for a weekend.

Ooh agal, make it a hot tub rather than a sauna and they have got a customer. Is that £190 each or for the two of you. Sorry to be so crass and talk money and all that.

Would definitely recommend Drunken Duck - one of my fave weekend away places - really lovely

We have 4 dc and really feeling the pinch atm so couldn't have afforded anymore than that.

Have heard good reports about Drunken duck but slightly put off because we stayed in the punchbowl owned by the same people shortly after it opened and found it a bit self consciously trendy and not as good as it thought itself to be.

Will let you know how it was. I am sooo looking forward to it. First time alone for about 5 years lol

Sounds like you really deserve a break. We are spoiled as my mum looks after DS about 3-4 nights a year.

This weekend we were off to a wedding,although it involved sleeping at a youth hostel, so not a glamorous event, but very credit crunch friendly.

Monachyle Mor is nice enough, however if you're heading northish then I would recommend The Ardanaseig, on the banks of Loch Awe (www.ardanaiseig.com, beautiful location, lovely rooms nice food. I stayed here the week after I was at Monachyle Mor and there was no comparison really.
