Trip to York in October half term - recommendations for hotels please.

We are planning two nights or so in York during Oct half term, dd6 and ds8. We thought we might stay at the Premier Inn which is close to the railway museum and of course not so costly but the reviews I have read are mixed. Can anyone recommend somewhere with nice family rooms which is close to restaurants and the museum. Also is it worth going to viking museum - again I read that its a waste of money. Thought we would do the York Eye though.

bump as I'm wanting same. Is there such a thing as a family room in which I could watch tv while dd sleeps e.g. an l shape one curtained off or a suite?

That would be nice wouldnt it, i know the Premier inns that we've stayed in have just been one room. Hope someone knows of such a place.xxx

I live in York so don't know much about holtels but the Premier Inn is near the end of the major "drinking street" (Micklegate) in York so not sure how that would be. There is a Travelodge in the centre - Piccadilly - which is very very near Viking and Castle museums. Walk to Railway Museum would be do-able for your DCs or there is a road train which runs from in front of the Minster.

Jorvik (Viking Museum) very good. York Castle Museum good too. Boat trips on the River Ouse. Have fun!

We stayed in the Queens Hotel, which is just across the river from the town centre. We have two family rooms for the seven of us, and it was £100 per room, which included both a full breakfast buffet, and a three-course dinner.

Jorvik is very interesting and worthwhile.

Jorvik is good but book on line before you go,then you can just walk straight in past the massive queue ! Its expensive for the time it takes to go round. The castle museum and the railway museums are both great.We stayed at the holiday inn express which was about £70 a room including continental breakfast and was next to a bus stop which took you into York-about 2 miles I think.

Just remembered we also went to 'dig ' which I thought would be boring but was really good.

We stayed at the YHA last year with Wedgiesmum and 4 children between us (aged 6-10), which worked really well: Used Tesco vouchers so was super-cheap and the food was great.

Lovely 15 min walk into the city along the river bank. Past footbridge for Railway Museum.

I think the children most enjoyed going to DIG which was great fun, and VERY hands-on.

We went on a 'cruise' on the river, which was lovely too. Jorvik was OK. ds2 (8) saw the start of the Dungeons and decided it was too scary.

Tips in York:
Do not look at the bungee bouncing trampoline things and promise your children that if they are good today they can go on them tomorrow. Because they won't be there tomorrow
Don't look at the van selling crepes and promise your children they can have crepes at the end of the day if they are good ... because the van will be just closing up at the end of the day, and will refuse to sell/make your crepes ...!

Other than that it's a fab city: Enjoy!

disagree with Jorvik being good, it's very expensive, and as for most of it you are on the "cars" you can't stop and look at things that interest you, or go back and see them again. Have been as helper with school a few times and we always combine it with dig, which ime the children enjoy more. Railway museum is excellent, and castle museum pretty good as well.

Check out monkgate guest house, they do a 2 roomed family room and very close to the city walls. Also Bishops hotel, very nr to rail museum and do 2 bedroomed family room.Apparently have trampoline in garden etc too. Louise

Hi, Im also thinking of visiting York during the half term. Does anyone know of a good, family-friendly hotel, with an indoor pool? My daughter would love to use it, and enjoys swimming, or are there good, local pools? Thanks

The Apple House in York has nice family rooms but no pool. Not far from centre.Has a playground out the back!
