Has anyone been to Lundy?

Am wondering about it next year for all the kids (having a severely autistic son no cars is a big plus). Not sure how we'd cope with a week though. DS2 is a mega keen birdwatcher (now; although he's stayed with it for about 6 months now so I think the interest will remain in some form for a while longer).

Hmm perhaps we should do a day trip first to check it out (we live in Devon).

Do you think a (next year) 10 year old, 7 year old and 4 year old would last a week? They're quite outdoorsy.

Also are the cliffs treacherous (ds1 and cliffs = parental nervous wrecks).

I think you might be stretching it with the youngest one.....For me it was nice, but I wouldn't really want to do more than a day there. Dh has done a long weekend there, but that was a lads thing. There's not exactly a lot to do....you would have to keep an eye on the youngest with the clifs. That been said for a get away from it all, it could be nice....I'd do a day trip, see if you like it. Maybe Scilly Isles a better bet?

It does have a pub, and a shop....and the lighthouse....and birds....and the odd bit of watery wildlife, seals etc.

Thanks! The youngest would be OK-he birdwatches with the 6 year old it's the 9 year old (severely autistic) who is the worry. Especially with cliffs! He loves lighthouses though.

We have thought about the car free Scilly Isles as well. Will look into it.

a friend of mine lived there for a while. lots of sex & drugs apparently, as there wasn't much else to do....

You can stay in the lighthouse on Lundy. I think scilly isles would be a better destination, went twice when younger, good beaches for the kids too

I thinks the cliffs are pretty bad tbh. Friend lived there for a while as a warden. Described driving the wardens landrover along cliff road with no 'side' to it. Plus they used to keep cows but they kept being blown over the edge of the cliff!! (that may be a tall tale though!!) If you want, jimjams, I could ask his opinion on it for a holiday with kids? He is a nice, sensible chap ( but not a parent..)

A day or a couple of nights maximum I would say, I remember being a bit spooked by the cliffs.

Hmm sounds as if Lundy might be a winter destination for a weekend away for dh and I, rather than a trip with kids.

Possibly not winter, the sea is often too rough for the boat to sail apparently
