Flying from Glasgow/Edinburgh to see Hamilton. Any tips?

Hoping to get tickets for Hamilton in London for our daughter’s birthday? Sometime in Feb/March. Any tips on best airport to fly into? Where to stay? It’ll just be the 2 of us so a little bit wary of public transport in London late at night. (Not sure if I’m over thinking this part!)

Many thanks

Just get the train surely? Book advance tickets as soon as they are released (12 weeks usually) for cheaper tickets. Then maybe use Seatfrog for an upgrade.

Book a nearby Premier Inn or similar. Don't worry about "late at night' - theatre doesn't finish that late, there will be tonnes of people around, you're in tourist central.

Thank you. Can I ask why you suggest train rather than flying? I’ve done the train journey once before and it felt like a bit of a slog to be honest, but maybe there’s something I’m missing?

Time at the airport for baggage checks.
From central London none of the airports are under 40 minutes away, and you have to make allowances for lower frequency trains to Gatwick or Stansted.
February or March weather.

take the train - better for the environment and it takes you to the centre of London not an airport at the edge. once you factor in travel to airport, checkin, hanging about, landing, travel from airport etc, you will find the train is quicker and easier.

Have a look at flying into London ciry. Much quickest to get into the centre of London from and quite a small airport. Good transport links too.

If you fly to Luton you can catch a fast East Midlands train into St Pancras. It takes about 20 minutes ( ish). Stansted is much further away and is a slow train to Liverpool Street.

Where is Hamilton showing? Honestly the centre of London will be bustling at 10.30pm/ 11pm you will be fine!

If you are close to the main line station in either Edinburgh or Glasgow the time travelled door to door isn’t that much different to flying and you will be delivered straight into central London with no need for a further transfer (which can be expensive). HOWEVER avoid going home by train on a Sunday as there are often disruptions.

Hamilton is playing just outside Victoria station, isn’t it? Fly to Gatwick then train up to Victoria. Or train to King’s Cross (which I agree is much more fun, especially the Edinburgh train which goes along the coast) then direct tube.

If you fly into Stansted you can get a National Express straight to Victoria Coach Station. I can’t personally recommend any hotels though can see there is a Premier Inn very close. So you’d be a short walk from both the theatre and coach station.

if you're starting in the city centre, or close to it, then I think Edinburgh - Kings Cross is about the same time as flying once you factor in getting to/from the airport and check in time. However, if you need to train/bus into Edinburgh and you're coming from the North or West of the city you're probably as well to fly. Flights can be cheap but you need to factor in any baggage charges, seat selection and onward travel costs. If you're staying near Victoria then trains from Gatwick go into Victoria. Avoid the Gatwick express trains as they're more expensive than the other services and don't save that much time.

I haven’t flown to London in years, sometimes the cost of getting from the airport to central London was higher than the price of the flight. It’s much nicer taking the train, you can get it from about £70 return with advance tickets and a train picnic is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Last Feb me and my dd flew from edin to Luton first flight of the day and then Stansted to Glasgow last flight back the next day, my husband could pick us up. It cost £28 each for the return. Even with the travel costs from the airport it was much much cheaper than the train. So I would def check something like that. Transport is pretty simple and we stayed at Watford so a bit out the way for going to see Hamilton. Don’t think you can ever go wrong with a premier inn or travelodge.

Id get the train. It takes you straight into center of London...no faffing about with more travel from airport to get into central London. If its Euston you could book a hotel near there...about 15 walk to theatre .
I've done both and train is much more convenient

LIZS · Yesterday 17:04

Gatwick runs direct into Victoria station, on a Southern service, which is opposite the theatre.

The best airports for access to Central London are City & Heathrow. Take the DLR from City or the Elizabeth line from Heathrow. Stansted or Gatwick may be significantly cheaper, however.

wow! These are all enormously helpful. Thank you all so much! x

In terms of where to stay for theatre, I’d normally suggest either the Strand Palace or the Premier Inn, Red Lion St. depending on budget. Given Hamilton is in Victoria though. you should book one of the many options there. Be careful at night in the vicinity of the station. Here is something a bit different but in SW1 that you might not have thought of doing: going round the Royal Mews and seeing the various carriages. Enjoy your trip.
