Any more information such as their interests? There’s loads to do ….Anfield Tour, Gravity Max type places but if he’s a quiet bookish type they won’t be of any interest.
When is it? Good restaurants get booked up.

Tour of the Liver Building is excellent. If you like history, Western Approaches is great. Museum of Liverpool, World Museum and Walker Art gallery are all free and always good. Beatles stuff or tour of Anfield. Get a Ferry of they're running, or a train to the Wirral and get the best views of the city.
Have a great time!

The river of light is on currently and the floating book shop is docked here. Good time to visit!

If the weather stays ok then a day trip on the bus out to Sefton park for a walk, check out the palm house and then lunch on lark lane

Get the train to Southport formby or Crosby and have a walk along the beach,
museum of Liverpool has some Everton related stuff iirc
you could go to Prince Rupert’s tower too?

depends what’s else you like, there’s all the usual stuff like junkyard golf, climbing, ninja warrior, shopping, that you’d get in any major city.

More Liverpool specific, the cathedrals are great, as are the museums, galleries and many many Beatles related activities, but maybe not of interest for most teenage boys. Find somewhere for Scouse and take a trip across the Mersey.

Book restaurants in advance. Liverpool is a party town.
Is Salt House Tapas still open? Great food and fun for all ages.

The Anglican cathedral is an easy walk up from Bold St. You can get a lift to the top of the tower and the views are fabulous. Afterwards walk along Hope St. past the Catholic cathedral to the Victoria Building of the University which houses a very interesting museum and art gallery.

Victoria Gallery & Museum | University of Liverpool

Nestled in the heart of the University of Liverpool, you can’t miss the VG&M's home in the iconic redbrick Victoria Building. You'll find a place buzzing with art, history and ideas.

Any teen appropriate nightlife? He loves a pub quiz or interesting bars to see / places to eat for evening?

We didn't do this when we visited recently as it was too windy, but it is good to know there is a lift. It has to be the tallest cathedral I have ever visited, and it is magnificent.

The crypt at the metropolitan cathedral is worth visiting as well. It costs £5, but is worth it. The Victoria Gallery and museum is lovely. It won't take long to look around, but the building is beautiful and is the origin of the term red brick university.

The Georgian quarter has lots of beautiful Georgian buildings, cobbled streets and some lovely places to eat. Liverpool also has a small Chinatown if you enjoy Chines food. We like Man Tsuen Ho. It is on the right just after you have passed the Chinese gate. I don't know how authentic it is but the food is very good.

Weather permitting I would do an open top bus tour to get your bearings and a trip on the Mersey.

Castle Street has loads of places to eat. Rudy's is good for pizza, but definitely book this.

Adding a few more ideas -

Bistro Lao for gorgeous food.
Cat café on bold street for furry cuddles
Boom battle bar for electric darts and indoor games - with cocktails for parents
