A weekend in Shrewsbury

I want to visit Shrewsbury because my late DM loved it.
Is there enough there to do for a whole weekend?
I'll be getting the train, so I can't pop to other places easily.

Percy Thrower has a lovely garden (designed by him I think) in the centre (in Quarry park). Worth having a walk around and nice enough to sit with a sandwich and coffee.

Are you visiting alone? What would you usually do in a place? There's a nice-ish market and some lovely restaurants and pubs. Streets are pretty as well.
If you really can't fill the time, you could get a bus to Ironbridge.

It was more of an emotional connection because she was adopted and her real mum was from Shrewsbury.

She liked walking.

I will be going alone.

Attingham Park is a nearby national trust property that would take up one of the days you are there. It's lovely and well worth a visit.

You can walk all along the river (it loops around the town, if you look at the map). Visit churches etc. Very quaint shopping areas but you need to find them, the actual centre has some very 60s buildings. Nice market hall. Visit the castle. Visit the Shrewsbury Prison (an attraction, actual prison is closed). See whats on at the theatre Severn.
Ironbridge is llvely but you'd have to take a bus, or the train to Telford and a taxi.

The 18th century classical style church of St Chad's.

It's worth a walk around what's left of Old St Chad's and the Tudor streets around it, and the nearby Market Hall.

It's sounds like there's enough for a weekend then. And there's always cafes with a book 😀 Thank you everyone.

If you wanted to, you could pop over to Ludlow for half a day. It's a lovely little town

And only 30 minutes by train from Shrewsbury. Great idea.

See if you can book a walking tour around the town. See if anything is on at Theatre Severn and have a look at the Music Hall museum/Galley. The quarry park is lovely, especially The Dingle.

Abbey, Prison, Castle and Library all worth look round. No “one big thing” to look at and nothing that will need more than a hour - but it’s a beautiful historic town and great for pottering about, as is Ludlow.

If you enjoy walking/hiking you could also get the train to Church Stretton and walk up Carding Mill Valley - the Stretton Hills are wonderful.

It’s a lovely town for a couple of days. The park is beautiful; there’s a church yard with Scrooge’s gravestone near to the park. Some nice pubs. The prison is well worth a visit.
