Day trip ideas from Lanarkshire

I am spending some time in scotland at the end of next month. And really looking forward to it. Will be staying in a town in Lanarkshire with good rail connections but my friend has a car there we can drive.

I'm thinking of a nice day trip.Somewhere to take my friend. We've already done Loch Lomond ferry to Luss from Balloch but it was a very, very long time ago, and i'm sure she wouldn't mind doing it again. But then this is weather dependent, and it might be raining

The other idea I had was a heritage train journey from Bo'ness. Maybe the train that serves fish and chips on it and we can also look at the railway museum.

Does anyone have any suggestions for nice things to do in the area probably no more than an hour drive away?

Need a few backup options? In case she's not up for trains

Linlithgow palace and town heritage trail, Japanese Garden Scotland near Dollar, a trip to Moffat, and New Lanark and the falls of Clyde

Lanarkshire is pretty large, so "an hour away" could be quite different depending on if you're in Cambuslang, Lanark or Biggar.

I'm guessing maybe motherwell or hamilton if it's got good train links?
Glasgow and Edinburgh should be within an hour or so by car or train.
Drive over to Largs and take the boat over to Cumbrae, or to Wemys Bay and then the ferry to Bute and bus to Mount Stuart.
New Lanark
Falkirk Wheel
Stirling Castle

Can you get to Dumfries House? It’s been renovated by the king and it’s fantastic. Great gardens too.

And all the city delights of Glasgow are a short train trip away too.
