Somewhere to go near a sandy beach that's not going to cost the earth

DH and I have been really unorganised this year in sorting out a holiday. Normally we book in the new years, but so much was going on for us that we completely forgot.

Now money is tight and our budget for somewhere to stay is about £250

We've now got about 4 weeks to find something for us and 2 DC's (4 and 18mn). All we really want is to be in walking distance of a fairly nice town and a sandy beach. But everyhing we are looking at for 4 - 7 days is in excess of £750, I mean is it too much to ask for?

I am getting desperate at the idea of not getting away for a few days, and thoughts have even turned to getting a family room at a travel lodge for £19 a night for 3 days.

Any other ideas please??

I promise we will be more organised next year.

Oh, lowfat, I did have a good look at places down my way (Dorset/Devon) but couldn't find anything within budget. Sorry about that ; hope you find something.

A Travel Lodge on the A5 is looking good, obviously next to a big field for a nature walk, picnic and game of football

Camber Sands? LOVELY beach

This companies cottages are very reasonable. Quite a lot of the Nefyn based holidays will within walking distance of the beach.

CountessDracula · 27/06/2008 17:24

whereabouts do you want to be?

Lowfat · 27/06/2008 17:26

Charliecat - nowhere to stay nearby within budget.

It's our own fault, but if worse comes to worse we can do a 1 day beach trip and stay in a travel lodge.

And we can use the rest of the budget for day trips to London to go to the free museums etc and treat the children to obscenely huge ice creams and crappy souveniers(sp) from all the little kiosks etc!

We are in Buckinghamshire so anywhere within a 3 hour drive raius would be good

Try accommodation between Barmouth and Harlech in Wales. The beaches are gorgeous. Barmouth is a real donkeys on the beach, candyfloss and sticks of rock seaside resort but there are some beautiful little villages between it and Harlech. The beaches are stunning - miles and miles of sand.

pointydog · 27/06/2008 17:29

I think you'll always pay a lot to be within walking distance of a beach

slayerette · 27/06/2008 17:30

This is the beach at Harlech

Lowfat · 27/06/2008 17:33

Thanks Slayerette, we are potentially teaming up with some friends to increase budget, so I have hope. And I love Wales, it's where my all my grandparents came from and I holidayed there a bit as a child.
