Ideas of where to stay for 45th Wedding Anniversary

We will be celebrating 45 years of marriage in August and would like ideas for somewhere to stay for the weekend.

We are well-travelled and will not be long back from Crete.

We would like somewhere with a nice hotel in the centre of a small town/village with bars and restaurants within walking distance. We are happy to drive out to a beauty spot or attraction.

My husband is having a knee op later in August, so not too much walking if possible.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Where in the Country will you be travelling from ?

No point in us suggesting a lovely Cornish Village is you are just going for the weekend, and live in Northumberland, or a great place on Anglesey if you live in Suffolk, etc.

Where are you OP and how far do you want to drive?

The Manor House, castle coomb in the Cotswolds is lovely. Beautiful hotel, grounds but a very tiny village.

The Isles of Glencoe? Though I have no idea how far you are willing to travel.

Sorry for the late reply we have been in Crete!
We will be up near Manchester visiting the family the week before, so anywhere with in a 6 hour drive of there really.
I am looking for a special place with nice independent shops and eateries and a nice hotel.

Always difficult to tell what someone else would like, but take a look at Old Stocks Inn in Stow on the Wold. Although it is officially a 2 star hotel the larger rooms are lovely and the food is very good. In the centre, so access to all the other bars and restaurants in the town. Note, there are stairs and no lift, but assuming your husband coped with stairs at home there are no more than normal!

As PPs have said, I think the Cotswolds would be ideal.

We’ve stayed in two hotels in the Cotswolds Inns & Hotels group. My favourite is the Hare and Hounds, which is next to Westonbirt Arboretum. However, there’s nothing else there (although plenty to drive to close by). We’ve also stayed in The Manor House in Moreton-in-Marsh, which is on the high street, so has shops and restaurants you could walk to. Both are lovely, and there are other hotels in the group in other Cotswolds locations.

Look at The Cavendish Hotel in Baslow, Derbyshire. It's very close to Chatsworth House, and part of the Estate's property portfolio.
Also only a short drive from Manchester.

Or, in the same area, The Peacock at Rowsley, near to Bakewell and Haddon Hall.
