DS has inset days either side of October half term week this year, so I'd like to take him somewhere Friday-Monday but I don't know where.

We're in Cambridgeshire and it needs to be manageable by public transport.

He loves rockets, planes, engineering in general and history.

We had a great time in Edinburgh last year. We've also been to Bristol a few times. We've been to London and Cambridge plenty of times.

Edited to add-he'll be in Year 8.

I really like Glasgow. There is an absolutely brilliant science museum there. And you could do a day trip to the National Museum of Flight which has a Concorde. Edinburgh is closer but I don't like it so much as a city. But lots of history!

ETA Oops sorry - missed you have already been to Edinburgh!

Or how about Norwich and the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum?

York is lovely for a weekend break, plenty of history and there's the railway museum if he would be interested in that.

I forgot to say, we've also been to York.

Norwich looks good.

Liverpool

Bath! The Roman baths are amazing and there is lots of other history stuff to do.

MinnieMountain · 19/06/2026 06:43

Bath is a great idea. I've only ever stayed a night there for a wedding.

Would Telford work as a base (I'm aware it's boring) for visiting Ironbridge, the RAF museum and Shrewsbury?

The National Space Centre in Leicester

Manchester -museum of science & industry, people's history museum, imperial war museum of the north. Also Styal Mill or a day trip to Chester.

I know you have been to Bristol but have you visited the Aerospace Museum there?

Also in the west country is the helicopter Museum at Weston-super-Mare the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Haynes motor Museum in the Yeovil area. You could combine it with a trip to Clarks Village at Street (designer outlet), Glastonbury and Wells.

DS has been into space, rockets and aeroplanes since he was at infant school. So yes 😁
