east/south Somerset, Wiltshire - half-day out ideas?

I have a long drive from London to west Somerset coming up. I was thinking I might set out early doors and stop off somewhere en route for half a day out, then travel on to my destination in the late afternoon. The stop-off could either be inland, somewhere between London and west Somerset, or at the Bristol Channel coast somewhere north Somerset
Ideas for places to visit welcome. Will have teenager with me.
Ruling out ...
I don't think I've got enough time to do Bath
Stonehenge too regimental and expensive, plus its half term
Done Glastonbury and Wells already

But I would love to hear any other ideas at all. TIA.

Longleat?

BeanMeUp · 27/05/2026 08:58

If you have a national trust membership, Tyntesfield is a nice stop off for a mooch around and some food. Not far from M5 J20

Similarly, Westonbirt arboretum.

Is it just you/adults or kids as well?

TY for these great ideas so far.
The travelling party will be: me, DH, teenager (but not that grumpy, will go along with stuff)

Sherborne might fit. Two castles and the abbey and lots of independent shops and cafes on Cheap Street. It's a good half-day.

Painshill? There’s a cool crystal grotto

Salisbury is also very nice and Stonehenge is nearby

Wardorf castle and shaftesbury.

If you need to entertain a teen as well, potentially Cheddar Gorge and caves? Although may be further along the journey than you want it to be.

Clarks Village for shopping at Street
Salisbury
Haynes Motor Museum near Yeovil

Stourhead

Wasywasydoodah · 31/05/2026 02:11

Stourhead also. Really lovely national trust garden. Or minehead for the beach. Longleat is also a good call

WallaceinAnderland · 31/05/2026 02:32

I wouldn't go to Longleat for just half a day.
