Cool/Unusual places in South East via public transport from Brighton?

I've asked Google and ChatGPT but it's mainly busy tourist attractions, days out for kids or places I've already been. I'm looking for some hidden gems or unusual places to visit 🙏.
The background is that I had agoraphobia quite a few years ago caused by an illness, and the lasting effect of that has been travel anxiety. So I'm trying to build my confidence by doing little day trips on my own before hopefully going to Wales or Scotland at some point in the future, which will be such a big achievement for me!

Unfortunately I can't drive and don't have loads of spare money, so it has to be just day trips at the moment.

I generally like animals, nature, old things, art and quirky things.

My favourite places so far have been Lewes, Hastings, Wakehurst Place and the fossilised dinosaur footprints 🦖 in Bexhill . Buttt I think I've now seen enough castles, churches and Tudor houses to last me a lifetime!

So hoping to get some new and interesting local suggestions, especially ones where I don't have to walk on a 60mph road with no pavement to a train station like last week!!

Chichester is great. Nice buildings, art gallery and museum.

Charleston House? You can get the bus there from Lewes.

Agree with Arundel and Chichester - you could go to the Festival Theatre, it is genuinely very good (lots of West End shows start off there).

Portsmouth is very do-able on the train and the museums there are great.

Dover - it’s a long train ride but you could set off early. Dover Castle, White Cliffs, etc.

Do you like walking? There’s lots of the South Downs Way around Brighton, you can do a section then get the bus or train back. Cuckmere Haven/Seven Sisters is lovely, and so are all the villages around there (Alfriston etc).

I’m guessing living in Brighton, you’ve probably been up to Devils Dyke? I love it up there - fantastic views and really exhilarating on a nice day. The Breeze 77 bus goes from the Palace Pier and you can pick it up en route. Think it’s weekends and bank hols. until mid-June when it’s every day. You can also get Breeze buses to Stanmer Park and Ditchling Beacon

Fishbourne Roman Palace and Garden
Sheffield Park

Rye was my last trip a few weeks ago 😊. It was very picturesque!

You can get to Sheffield Park gardens and the Bluebell Railway by bus from Lewes.

Chichester looks like a good shout from the photos on Google. I’ve done pretty much all the coast from Worthing to Dungeness but not much to the west or inland.

Tunbridge Wells has some special sandstone I think? So that’s another one for the list. I was thinking maybe Canterbury too, 3 hours is quite a long journey for a day trip but less scary if I know I’m coming back the same day

If you go to Shoreham on the train, you can then walk along the Downs Link (it's a disused railway line so different to the South Downs Way and probably a lot flatter) to places like Steyning and further. All the way to Surrey if you wanted. 😁
