Best places to stay and things to see on the Llŷn Peninsula

Hoping to visit the Llŷn Peninusla (Wales) later this summer as I don't know it at all.
I like scenery, walking, swimming, nice cafes, history & sightseeing.
Where would be the best location to stay - nicest villages / areas?
What are the must-sees?
Recommendations welcome!

Are uou watching Welsh Chapel Dream on C4? It could give you some inspiration.

@mcmuffin22 that's what made me consider it as a destination! But I always thought Pwllheli was fun of caravan parks and not very nice?
I have been to Porthmadog, Betws y Coed, Beddgelert etc Pascal before so thought it would interesting to explore somewhere new. I just don't know where to start looking for accommodation.

Aberdaron is one of my favourite places, it is right at the tip of the peninsula but so beautiful.

Abersoch is very touristy (and expensive!) and busy in summer, it is a nice village with a nice beach though - just depends what you’re after

Pwllheli is lovely, it does have caravans but it’s not seedy or anything

Love that show. Love Keith and Marge.

Me too. And I like that they're showing lots of the local area in this series.

Lucky you! You are in for a treat as it’s a beautiful part of the world!
Pwllheli town is grotty, unfortunately - as with many UK towns, it has seen better days. It could be a good base in terms of access to other locations, but have a good look on Google street view so you know what to expect in the town.
If don’t need a big town, Nefyn is a stunning location.

Criccieth is lovely. Castle, beach, train station. You can walk the coastal path to Porthmadog and then get the train back

Jasmin71 · 25/04/2026 10:42

Porth Oer, Porth Iago, Bardsey Island, and the lovely railway at Porthmadog.

The Ty Coch Inn at Morfa Nefyn. Card payments only. Lovely, lovely place.

mamaduckbone · 25/04/2026 13:58

Llanbedrog is gorgeous - there’s a beach, a lovely cafe and gallery and you can walk up to the iron man sculpture at the top of the hill. I think they do open air theatre in the summer as well. We’re not big fans of Pwllheli, but Criccieth is nice and I’d definitely second the pp’s recommendation of Ty Coch in Morfa Nefyn (or the pub on the beach as it’s known in our house) Great atmosphere on a sunny afternoon / evening.

BejamBabe · 25/04/2026 21:12

Thanks, some good tips. So Pwllheli not a place to stay then really, apart from convenience?
What are the Nefyns like? Or Abersoch? Or Aberdaron?

We stayed in Morfa Nefyn last year, was stunning. Good local shop and a pub in the village, gorgeous walk over the golf course or along the beach to the Ty Coch. We visited Pwheli, not worth it, and Abersoch, lovely beach but not much else there. Depends what you want though!

Aberdaron is lovely but only a couple of shops / cafes. We went there every summer when I was a kid and stayed in an old farmhouse about 2 miles out of Aberdaron. Abersoch is hugely overrated IMO and full of materialistic wankers with status anxiety. But worth half a day as there are a few shops. Llanbedrog is lovely and has a nice art gallery/ cafe. Porth Ysgo beach is nice but yoi have to walk down to it. Also the Ty Coch Inn beach is worth going to. Also Whistling Sands Beach. It's a great area with lots of nice beaches.
