Family activities within one hour drive of Cardiff??

I'm heading to Cardiff in April with partner, and two kids (7 & 9) - any recommendations of things not to miss, maximum one hour from the city (driving). We're only there three nights for a long weekend, and one day is taken up with family stuff, so we have two days to fill.

Thanks!!

Good recommendations already above but Castell Coch also fun
seaside at Penarth or Barry if weather is nice
the museum in the city centre on Park place is also really good

Boat trips at Cardiff Bay

LittleGreenDuck · 27/03/2026 16:11

White water rafting at the International White Water Centre

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/03/2026 16:13

All of the above, plus a boat trip around the bay, the speed boats are great fun!

Cosmeston, St Fagans, Bryngarw Country Park, Margam Park, Garwnant Visitor Centre, Cardiff Bay barrage walk to Penarth - although all of these are quite weather dependent! Castell Coch is nice but the scaffolding is still up.

St Fagans, Techniquest - it looks like a drive to Swansea is possible in an hour on a good day - so beaches there or barry island which is closer for beach day - castles cardiff - Casttell Coch - Caerphilly castle or Chepstow - you could also I think drive to Caerleon - National Roman Legion Museum and amphithere and many nice pubs near river.

Cardiff Bay barrage walk to Penarth - that is a nice walk though bit windy when we did it and had to stop for a coffee to warm up.

Oh I didn’t know this about castell
coch thank you, am going myself end of April. Cant wait. Lived there as a student then for a few years after and I love it. Still feels like home somehow.

St fagans if the weather is dry.

what direction are you coming from? Most of the things closer I'd recommend have probably already been suggested but Bristol is only an hour away from Cardiff so could expand that way if needed - not that there's not enough to do closer to Cardiff but probably more indoor-friendly museums and stuff there - wake the tiger, we the curious, etc.

Coming from just south of Birmingham, so planning to come down the M50/A40 route.
