Hotel recommendations, not in Kensington!

I’m currently planning my annual London city break and have always stayed in Kensington.
Looking for an alternative this time, will be visiting The National Theatre, Spitalfields.

Any suggestions for somewhere not too £££. Small and interesting? Good chain?

Or frequently stay at Marlin Hotel/Appts in Waterloo, very pleasant but small help yourself breakfast rather than table service full English.

There's Premier Inns all over the place, I like the Hub ones.

Second the PI Hubs. We stayed in the Westminster Abbey Hub last month and I couldn't say a bad word about it.

We did, however, pay for the 'bigger room' which is pretty much normal PI size and was only a tenner more. I don't think i'd be that keen on the smaller windowless ones.

One Aldwych is lovely too, just a stroll across the bridge - beautiful view of the City on one side and Westminster the other!
