Location for a short break to combine with a weekend in York

DD is at university in York and we live in the South East.

Earlier this year we combined a weekend in York to see her, with a short break in the Yorkshire Dales. We are now planning a visit in Feb/March next year and hoping to do something similar. Can anyone suggest somewhere that might be nice to visit for a few days, that it makes sense to combine with going to York?

Whitby is supposed to be great. Especially if you’re a fan of Dracula.

Agree with Whitby & you could also visit that coast further north, there’s some lovely places, Sandsend, Staithes, Saltburn by the sea.

Forgot to include Newcastle, great city & probably 2 hours drive from York or an hour on the train.

Whitby is lovely I agree. Scarborough worth a visit for a traditional seaside town.

Pickering is a nice little town between Whitby and York. There’s a steam train that goes from there too.

Harrogate is a lovely base for a few days - lots of day trips near by including Fountain’s Abbey, Harlow Carr, Stockeld Park, Brimham Rocks and Mothet Shipton’s Cave.

I was going to say go to the coast, Whitby, Staithes or similar

We combined York, Harrogate and Whitby recently - defo recommend Whitby (day trip/walk round Goathland, staithes and Robin Hoods Bay) Otherwise maybe Leeds for shopping?

Knaresborough!

Definitely Whitby 🥰

IggyAce · 24/11/2025 14:49

Whitby, Knaresbrough, Newcastle, Tynemouth.

ShaunaOfTheDead · 24/11/2025 14:50

Whitby
Leeds
Harrogate
The Dales
Saltaire/Howarth area
Peak District and Chatsworth House

Depebeing on whether your DD is coming without, as you don’t want to be backtracking.

Another 'vote'' for Whitby.

The North York Moors are a great choice if you're looking for a quick getaway from York. They have gorgeous scenery, quaint towns, and are conveniently located near the city. Alternatively, for a blend of ancient sites and beach beauty, think about Whitby on the coast. Both take a leisurely few-day travel, with York serving as the main hub.

What about one of the NT cottages at Ravenscar? Stunning views, handy for Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby etc.

wizzler · 25/11/2025 09:42

Knaresborough is lovely, Helmsley too

It goes Pickering to whitby. All signs are pointing to Whitby. You could also look at Robin Hoods Bay if you want a quieter place. Or Scarborough for fading seaside grandeur (it is knackered these days however)

I'd also consider riding on the Settle Carlisle Railway and staying at one of the town en route. All of these ideas would be better slightly later in the season however
