Bath/Bristol/North Somerset

Ds1 is at university in Bath and we're hoping to head that way for a visit at half term.

We don't want to stay in Bath itself as we've had plenty of days out there when picking him up / dropping him off, but will need to not be too far away.

We'd also like to incorporate a day in Bristol to keep ds16 happy with some shopping/Banksy spotting.

Dh and I wouldn't mind being on the coast or a nice village to get a walk or two in.

Can anyone suggest somewhere that ticks all those boxes as we don't really know the area at all. Portishead?

Clevedon. Bradford on Avon. Wells and surrounds for Cheddar Gorge

Wellow is just outside Bath and has lovely walks and a good pub. Very rural.

Portishead is lovely too but not personally walked around there but do walk around Clapton in gordano which in a very small village just outside Portishead.

Frome is very nice and 20 mins from bath, and some nice walks. Mells is very pretty.

Warminster and westbury, again 30 mins from bath/ 1hour from Bristol- great walks on Salisbury plain.

For convenience there's Keynsham which is in the middle between Bristol and Bath. It's about 10 minutes to either city by train and 20 minutes by bus. Some of the local walks include following the Bristol to Bath cycle track (although it does get a lot of MAMILs thinking they're competing in the Tour de France); following the river Avon to Hanham or Saltford, which is actually part of The Monarch's Way and if you're feeling really energetic you can climb Kelston Hill, which is at the start of The Cotswold Way, and on a clear day has views across Bath in one direction and in the other direction has Bristol, the River Severn and Welsh hills in the distance.
There's no Premier Inn type places but there's a couple of independent hotels and several bars and restaurants .

I'd also suggest Bradford on Avon. Set on beautiful canals. Old town. Trains at least every 30 mins to central Bath and Bristol (Bath takes about 12 mins and Bristol about 20-25). Also buses go directly past Bath Uni.

Definitely Bradford on Avon!
