Trying to book the train for Tuesday to return on Wednesday and it’s like £70 for 2.

does anyone do this regularly and is it cheaper to just turn up and pay?

What time are you travelling? It's half that for the times I put in. The cheapest way is likely to be advance singles, if you know exactly when you want to travel.

Where did you find those prices? It depends what time you want to travel but paying by contactless is probably the cheapest option. Offpeak it's £12.30 for a single and £16.60 at peak times.

My parking starts at 9am and I’d like to depart the next day at 3-4 but no set times really. Just coming to see a concert so don’t have to be anywhere on time or anything. Thanks for looking! I literally never take a train…

If you are happy to book on a specific train there are some advance tickets on that route. Check the East Midlands trains website for the dates you are going.

If you want flexibility then as long as you start your first journey after 9.30am and the return before 4pm you will get the offpeak contactless fares.

Thanks everyone. When I first started looking a few weeks ago I’m sure it was £3-4. Looks like the cheapest return for 2 is £48. Not was I was expecting to pay really but I’m probably just an out of touch northerner.

Just FYI it’s never cheaper to pay on the day for any train service - usually the more in advance, the better.

The train line between St P and Luton Airport is v expensive - as PP have said, if you can be dead cert on when you’re travelling, it’s a bit cheaper, but on the whole, is a very expensive journey (I used to commute from the end of the line of St P, at nearly £50 a day!!)
