Visiting N.Ireland will we need passports to cross into Ireland

Arranging a trip to Northern Ireland, last time I went it was pre Brexit. I loved the place and can’t wait to go back. While there we often hopped over the border to visit places. Can you still do the same now or will I need a passport? My passport has just expired so just wondering if will need it for this trip or can I hold off until next year when I go to France?!

Also, taking dog to Northern Ireland, (know I need a document for this) but will I also need a passport (or whatever the equivalent now is to travel to Europe) for the dog if we do day trips to Ireland?

No, there is no border control between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Don't know about the dog, but we didn't need to show a passport when we drove over the border as it's a common travel area. I would carry your driving licence though just in case.

DoRayMeMeMe · 25/08/2025 21:44

No, the UK and Ireland are part of the Common Travel Area.

You will probably need it to get on a plane though.
Pet passport might be a yes though

You won't even notice you're crossing except the speed signs will change to km.

Absolutely no passport required to go into Republic of Ireland from NI. Now I don’t know about travelling with a dog from England to NI but no one will stop you going into ROI with a dog in a car. Have a great trip.

There’s no border control from Northern Ireland to Ireland. You won’t even notice crossing from NI to Ireland, the only evidence will be the road signs change.

VeryStressedMum · 25/08/2025 22:17

Not if you go by road but take it if you fly

Piggywaspushed · 25/08/2025 22:26

Are you hiring a car? You need to tell them if you are crossing the border. They add to the cost, natch...

BlueCarRedCar · 25/08/2025 23:08

We’ll be getting the ferry and taking our car from Scotland to NI. This is what we did last time and I remember crossing the border between NI and I was a non issue, as pp have said, you barely notice you’ve even done it! Just didn’t know if it had changed since Brexit. Thanks everyone 😁

You need photo id if flying to Belfast. Nothing checked when we’ve gone by boat but take it just in case. And no, no border
