Cheap place to stay an hour from Edinburgh

Hi, I would love any suggestions on a cheap area to stay that is about an hour from Edinburgh please when travelling from England. We have midday flights booked from Edinburgh but are travelling from the West Midlands so would like to travel up the evening before and just have somewhere to get our heads down overnight.

I'm hoping by doing this the kids won't be shattered on the first day of our holiday and we don't have to set off at 3am for a long drive to Scotland. We are 3 adults and 2 kids ( eldest is 18 so tech an adult).

Can anyone recommend any areas that are not touristy? Its literally to sleep as we would be arriving at 9pm and checking out at 7am. The places I have been looking at are over £200 so DH would rather drive. I don't mind Premier Inn, Travel Lodge, Air bnb etc but I think I am choosing the wrong towns as I don't know the area.

Any tips would be so appreciated! I need to get a wriggle on as it is for this Thursday night! I only booked the holiday this morning

Thank you

Try Kirk Yetholm Hostel. It has family rooms.

I’ve stayed at the premier inn at Leith a few times.

Michele09 · 17/08/2025 16:03

Could you try the Eastern suburbs of Glasgow. Edinburgh is very booked up or expensive due to the Fringe Festival.

chipsandpeas · 17/08/2025 16:03

anything close to edinburgh will be expensive as its still festival time. id see how much hotels are around the airport, edinburgh park and newbridge and just pay it

BashfulClam · 17/08/2025 16:03

Premier inn, Edinburgh park. It’s close the airport with free parking.

I’ve stayed at the premier inn at Leith a few times.

We paid £150 per room there last year plus parking £8 per day, it was quite rundown tbh but decent places to eat nearby.

StanfreyPock · 17/08/2025 16:19

Edinburgh is rammed at the moment with the festival so best to keep out!

Livingston or Linlithgow/Falkirk might be an idea, better to stay west of the city bypass, as the eastern half has nightmare queues at Sheriffhall roundabout. You don't want to get caught in that en route for a flight.

Good luck!

With the festival on an hour from Edinburgh would be definitely be cheaper- try searching Hamilton.

periglpfan · 17/08/2025 16:27

Try Fife. Premier inn Glenrothes is a basic one but, usually cheaper and has more availability than Dunfermline during August and not actually that much longer to airport - an extra 10 min along A92. Everywhere along the central belt will be booked or pricey during August.

outdooryone · 17/08/2025 16:28

Premier Inn, Stirling South. Just off motorway, 30 mins to airport in the morning. Currently showing a room for two at £130.
Don't stay Stirling Central Premier Inn.

Michele09 · 17/08/2025 16:43

Premier Inn East Kilbride £101 per room. You'll need 2 rooms for 5 people though, children only allowed to share room up to age 15.
As an aside ages 16 and 17 are an anomoly in PI, not allowed to share a room with parents but not allowed either to stay there alone and need an adult to supervise even though they may be on a different floor. They're somewhere in limbo between a child who can share a room and an independent adul who can book and stay alone.

I second Premier in Edinburgh park. Very convenient and easy to get to. Less than 15 mins from the airport. We are just in Glasgow and will stay here when we have a 6am flight.

Edited

We stay there too when visiting Edinburgh but it's sold out already for the Fringe.

Try East Kilbride, think you've just liked a 2nd post I wrote about it, just South but cheapest I could find en route.

Ghostofborleyrectory · 17/08/2025 18:21

I stayed with my family at a decent two bedroom flat with ensuite in Stirling for 120 quid last week. Found it in booking.com as we had to break our trip due to storm

Purpleisnotmycolour · 17/08/2025 18:30

Larbert, Falkirk, grangemouth. All near Edinburgh but will be cheaper

rookiemere · 17/08/2025 18:32

I would look for something en route. Moffat would be a good choice as on the way and about an hour from Edinburgh.

Randomchat · 17/08/2025 18:34

Do you want to be south of Edinburgh so you're stopping on the way? Some of these suggestions are north of Edinburgh so you'll be doing extra driving. But maybe you don't mind about that?

periglpfan · 17/08/2025 18:39

There is a middle ground answer here come to think of it. Anywhere near Edinburgh in August is extortionate and you aren’t doing it for the scenery or festival so why pay the mark up. Why don’t you just pick whatever is cheapest at a motorway service station or close to motorway north of Carlisle? Hamilton/motherwell would be my thought close to the m74 (south east of glasgow and en route) Your flight isn’t that early really but I would feel the same not wanting to risk the whole journey that early from midlands.

Vintagenow · 17/08/2025 18:46

Livingston is 20 minutes west of Edinburgh and has a few hotels. I would stay either south or west of Edinburgh.

bluechilli47 · 17/08/2025 19:10

Borders area. Peebles, Moffat

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 17/08/2025 19:22

Any of the premier inns will be over £230 as you need two rooms. Stepps is £118 and Hamilton £133 a room. The most reasonable and closest for premier inns.

ThatRoseBear · 17/08/2025 22:10

Thank you, we have booked a hotel somewhere near St Andrews at a good price using the genius discount. It's a little bit further up but I would rather that and have a 50 min drive to the airport than the alternative xx

@ThatRoseBearhave you realised that’s an extra hour on to your journey at night and then again in the morning? Hamilton etc you are passing on the way up and only 45min to the airport in the morning.

Apologies if I’m stating the obvious. Enjoy your trip.
