I've seen YHA mentioned on a couple of threads recently.

Has anybody done this?

Which Hostel would you recommend?

Any words of advice?

TIA

We stayed at the youth hostel adjacent to St Pauls cathedral a couple of years ago, (right before christmas). The family room was clean and adequate, the food was not good! but it's London so at least you can eat elsewhere! We didn't have en-suite.

The other people staying ranged from other families, groups of girls christmas shopping and millions of 'Toff' teenagers who returned late from a ball and behaved horrendously, so bad that the police carted many of them away (still in ballgowns!).

All things considered we would stay in a hotel next time, we like the YH's in the lake distict though!

I stayed at Thameside YHA (I think it was that one) and it was much better than the 4* hotel we went to a few weeks later (weddings). We were not in a family room but they were really great, travel cot, age appropriate bedding all ready for us. Hostels are great but the big city ones can get noisy during holidays if there are school groups.

But in comparison, the 4* hotel took until around 11pm and 4 times of asking to give us a cot even though we booked it with the room then turned up with the cot and a duvet and pillow for a 5 month old

Thanks.

I was looking for anyone's experience of staying in a London YHA as a family.

We're basically looking at whether or not it's doable, as a family of five, because it seems a reasonably-priced option.

Hostel would be used just as a base whilst we explored London.

A hotel would be lovely, but rather expensive, as we'd need two rooms, as we were looking at cutting costs.

Cheshunt YH will give you the best of both worlds. Its right in the middle of the Lea Valley country park. But is 2 minutes walk to Cheshunt station which is 20 minutes into the City and 30 minutes from the West End

Will look at that one, Christy, seems a good option!

Have used travelodge before, may take another look there too, although it irritates that we have to use two rooms iykwim.

Do you really need two rooms? I've stayed in a travelodge in a group of 5 before now.
