Road Trip/ Train Trip with 6 year old - Suggestions please

I have a week off in August with my 6 year old DD and Id like to do a little road trip with her, I have a few ideas but would love some suggestions.

I thought about doing a trip on the train but then Im worried how much that will limit us not having a car at each destination?

  • Were about 50 miles outside of London, have family Id like to see in Cheshire (not essential but would be nice)
  • Would be looking to go for maybe 3-4 nights as accommodation is going to be expensive in the holidays
  • Like North Wales as its where my Nan used to go on holiday and her ashes are scattered so I like to visit every few years (sorry if that's morbid)

Any clever routes or destinations, nice places to go with a 6 year old (we have a short beach holiday a few weeks later so beach stuff not essential)

Any tips for reasonable accommodation that's safe for me and DD staying by ourselves?

Im sat looking at the map, but not getting much inspiration!

Obvious choice would be base yourself somewhere like Chester, if you want both Cheshire and North Wales. Could do thar by either train or public transport, go to Chester Zoo one day, into North Wales the next, family on the way there / way back?
