Seatfrog for cut price train upgrades

MamaClausToTheRescue · 24/06/2025 17:20

For anyone planning a longer journey by train, I recently came across several recommendations on mumsnet about using Seatfrog to secure train upgrades (to first class) for a much cheaper price than it would cost on the train.

i didn’t even know this was available, but also didn’t know at the time that you can use a referral code to save money when you use the app. Anyway, just wanted to share this as an extra discount. I’ve posted my own referral in the right place (last page of the bargains / referral codes board) but if you don’t want to use mine you can probably just google referral code for Seatfrog and you’ll find one. (Wish I had done that 😬).

My fiend mentioned seat frog to me recently. I’ve bought train tickets already (not bai Seatfrog) - do you know if u can still bid to upgrade on Seatfrog either tickets not bought through them?

MinnieMountain · 25/06/2025 05:46

@FlamingoFloss I think Seatfrog only sells the upgrades. I’ve got LNER tickets that I’m going to look at upgrading through them.

RampantIvy · 25/06/2025 05:52

Noted.
Can it be used with railcards?

Twelftytwo · 25/06/2025 06:03

No we recently did it and my dd had to pay the usual adult fare, there was no discount for her 16-17 railcard. However we got the upgrade on the way home for £13pp which was so worth it (LNER King's Cross to York and they had a nice cool air conditioned first class lounge at Kings X plus food & drink on the train.

Yes you can!

Yes. We’ve already bought tickets and we’re using a family railcard and you can still get the upgrade through Seatfrog.

Interesting. I've never seen a discount worth it on Seatfrog. It's always like £40 to upgrade and it's only £30 on the train if you just sit down in first class and ask the guard.

I travel regularly LNER east coast.

MinnieMountain · 25/06/2025 07:41

That’s interesting @Ladaha . Does it work on weekdays? I’m taking DS from Peterborough to Edinburgh in October.

Ladaha · 25/06/2025 07:55

Does what work on weekdays? Just sitting down? Yes, you can just ask the guard when you get on the train.

same, it's only ever shown me the same price as it would have cost for a 1st class ticket. Never seen a bargain!
