Doing the Welsh heritage trail - where is the best Italian cafe in the valleys?

DD (5) and I are making a trip to South East Wales next week, so that she can get a taste of her Welsh heritage (St Fagans, Rhondda Heritage Park, my old home and schools etc). Obviously, one of the key experiences must be a genuine valleys Italian cafe (selling Sidoli's ice cream, naturally). I haven't lived in the valleys since 1978 and my family sources of current info have either moved away or died, so my cafe-knowledge is out of date. Can anyone recommend a really good one? Preferably in the Merthyr or Pontypridd areas, but we can make a detour.

Please explain why an Italian cafe is part of Welsh heritage!

OK, this is no where near your intended destination but Joe's Ice Cream Palour in Swansea is THE best icecream in Wales, possibly the world. And is welsh Italian to boot.

SoupDragon...there is a huge Welsh-Italian contingent in Wales and lots of them ran fab little cafes. There are loads of them around.

Ah. I thought it was something like that.

BabyDragon is only 1/4 Welsh - she'll have to make do with Costa Coffee
