Long weekend 1.5-2 hours from Edinburgh

Any suggestions for a long weekend from Edinburgh? 2 teens plus dog.
Only want to travel/drive 1.5-2 hours as will be late Fri night to Mon.
Been Northumberland, Newcastle, Glasgow before.
Kids like activities and being outdoors and accommodation needs to be dog friendly.

Berwick on Tweed

Crieff Hydro is amazing. Lots to do.

If you can stretch to the 3 hour mark, Aviemore has everything you're looking for

ChilledProsecco · 28/04/2025 10:16

St Andrews, Aviemore (might be a bit far)

nwilson12 · 28/04/2025 10:20

@AliBaliBee1234 have you been to Crieff recently? Was considering it but I've not been since before kids and recent reviews were not the best.

We would like Aviemore but want to go for longer than a weekend so another time.

Durham or York by train are the obvious ones. York in particular is brilliant for children.

nwilson12 · 28/04/2025 10:34

@90swithcigarettesandalcohol I would love to go to York but too far to drive and we want to take dog with us.

Aberfeldy & surrounding areas are also lovely. Nice walks up the Birks, cinema, Kenmore for water sports.

But I think teens might like St Andrews more - mini golf on Himalayas, great dog walks at Tentsmuir, maybe a quick hop to Dundee for V&A.

LIZS · 28/04/2025 14:47

Dunkeld, Loch Lomond, Trossachs(Queen Elizabeth Park)?

ChocoChocoLatte · 28/04/2025 18:57

If there’s a pup involved, St Andrews is a great shout.

west sands: look at Blown Away and Dook

some golf : driving range action
museums - Dundee V&A not far, Discovery and wild shores aqua park / macmanus galleries & verdant works. All night bakery and trip up the law.

crail / st monans / Anstruther / Elie chain walk all of the East Neuk is lovely

boat to see the puffins at Isle of May
Saltdog Marine trips from Dundee for dolphin spotting

family have previously stayed at Balmeadowside just outside Cupar & travelled all about

nwilson12 · 28/04/2025 19:04

Thanks for the suggestions, looked at St Andrews but Airbnb is around £300+ per night which is not in budget.
Will have a look at other options.

@nwilson12 that's why I suggested balmeadowside - it's the other side of Cupar but easily within distance of the East Neuk and surrounding.

Pitlochry

Crail? Anstruther?
