How to get best price on UK train travel?

I don't get trains very often so not familiar with knowing how to get the best price

I vaguely remember that you used to be able to get discounted tickets if you book 3 months in advance but not sure if this is still the case

Can anyone advise?

Train line or split ticket. Off peak are cheaper and there are railcards you can buy that offer discounts.
