Solo trip 4-6 December

I’ve got 4-6 December to go away by myself. I’m looking for inspiration as I’m going round in circles.

Mainly I want headspace. Not a spa though.

Bhutan.

Globules · 26/11/2024 06:35

Bristol.

I went a few weeks ago. It's not at all what I expected and I only scratched the surface in my 3 days there.

Had a lovely trip to Lincoln this time last year. With a friend but would have been great solo too.

Can recommend the hotel if you want. They had singles.

MinnieMountain · 26/11/2024 06:53

Yes please @Phineyj . I was considering Lincoln.

Bristol is a great place @Globules but I went to university there, and with DH since, so feel like I’ve “done” it.

You lucky thing @MinnieMountain !

Then I'm going to put Winchester and Birmingham onto the table. Birmingham has lots of hidden places to explore. Winchester is just beautiful, and has one of the best Christmas markets in the country.

Lincoln is also lovely, so can't fault that choice either!

Winchester is beautiful. I don’t really like Birmingham.

What do we think of Norwich?

Where are you starting from and how far are you willing to travel (and by what means?)

Another2Cats · 26/11/2024 14:32

Anywhere along the Suffolk or Norfolk coast would be great. Lots of places to walk and lovely little towns and villages to visit from Aldeburgh and Southwold down south up to Wells-next-the-Sea up north.

Also, if you will be in the area then December is the perfect time to go and see the new born seal pups at Blakeney Point Nature Reserve.

You can either walk there

or take a boat ride

There are some nice places to stay nearby in Blakeney or Cley next the Sea

Blakeney is about an hour north of Norwich.

In that case I’d take the train to Alnmouth and spend time around the Northumberland coast

Edinburgh. Beautiful city

Blakeney is about an hour north of Norwich.

Edited

Blakeney is just inside that time limit.

Peterborough to Sheringham (via Norwich) 3 hours, then the Coasthopper CH1 bus to Blakeney (but it only runs once an hour).

I was pleasantly surprised by Durham recently

coffeemonsterrrr · 26/11/2024 16:26

Winchester, Salisbury, York, Bath, Cambridge, Oxford, Canterbury?

Phineyj · 26/11/2024 17:28

www.booking.com/hotel/gb/the-old-palace.en-gb.html we stayed here OP.

MinnieMountain · 30/11/2024 07:36

Thank you for the ideas everyone.

I’m going to Sheringham as I found a self-catering place that looks good. Now to look at the seal trips!

Alnmouth looks beautiful btw but the price of the train ticket at short notice was ridiculous.
