Staithes or Filey for Christmas break

Thinking of a couple of nights away between Christmas and New Year.

Somewhere scenic and relaxing, with a beach, pubs and cafes.

I've been to most other towns around this coast, so wondered if anyone had been to these towns and which to recommend?

Very different places and attract a different market.
Filey is probably a bit busier but Staithes is lovely and would be my choice (unless I had to park at the top of the hill)

Staithes. It's quiet but beautiful.

Filey has more facilties e.g. bigger town but Staithes wins IMO

Staithes. Or Runswick Bay.

If it's icy Staithes might not be your best bet Grin

Staithes looks lovely. I've been looking on Google maps.

If it were just me, I'd book Staithes in an instant. I have 2 teenagers so it may be a bit too quiet for them. I don't drink so can drive everywhere if we need to look for things to do. Although they might be happy lounging around, they're both pretty tired out with their studies.

Have been looking at The Bay holiday village in Filey. Has a few small things to do on site

Will ask them, but I'm a bit torn.

Do you to cook or eat out? Staithes will be very very quiet and most holiday cottages have to park at the top of the hill and walk down.
The bay at Filey is out of town and I’ve not been there but presume there are some on site facilities
Whitby will be very busy in the day but there are things to do and if you have parking with the holiday cottage you will be able to walk.
Have you thought of Scarborough? The town centre isn’t great anymore but it’s no worse than anywhere else but peasholme park and that end of town has had significant investment as have gardens on the south cliff down to the clock cafe. There’s a museum, art gallery and art cafe and work space. There’s the quiet seafront in north bay and the south bay and harbour is busier.

The Teens may enjoy Filey more to be honest. The Bay is popular
Staithes is great but theres not a lot going on.

Pancakeflipper · 16/11/2024 20:44

If you have teens look at Whitby. More to do.

Peakperformancetoday · 16/11/2024 20:46

Whitby would be a better bet I think

I visited Staithes once between Christmas and New Year, but nearly everything was closed, you might want to check before you go. I think it's quite common for smaller businesses to close down over that period, they certainly do in our town, though maybe less of an issue with somewhere that's a holiday destination.

Thank you all for the advice . I'll definitely look into Whitby and Scarborough too.

I feel in Winter Whitby would be best and just drive to the other two
