Twixmas with a 14 and 12yo - trips from Peak District, Birmingham , Manchester?

Hi, looking for ideas for things to do to entertain young teenagers who will just want to be on screens - I want a few days away and a plan of activities, as mooching about results in conflict.
I was thinking perhaps Peak District as then we can reach Alton Towers Water Park (which I think is good in winter, as plenty of indoor stuff?) and Chill Factore within an hour, and they might just tolerate country pubs with roaring fires 🤣 But then basing ourselves in a boring village might not go down well.
So maybe Birmingham or Manchester, for those places plus spending their Christmas money in the shops?
What other good day trips or activities in those (very broad!) areas should we think about?

We did a wonderful twixmas in Cornwall a few years ago, they had loads of fun activities. Lots of sandcastles on the beach and you could go surfing or do things like yoga. My kids are younger but perhaps something like that?

You could try Buxton, Bakewell or Matlock, so they had a bit of town to explore on their own?
